However, if you are a beginner or a casual player then you should follow these rules to improve your gameplay. For beginners, it will be a great point that they are following the rules and regulations so that there are fewer chances of being the runner-up.

Moreover, if you are an experienced player then I hope that this article also helps you a lot and it will be useful. So, there are a lot of rules that are hard to learn and follow and some of them are interesting as well.

Table Tennis Serving Rules:

However, if we are talking about the game then I will say that the aim of the game is simple. You just have to hit the ball over the net on your opponent’s side and the opponent hits back to you.

A point you will get if the opponent fails to hit the ball back to you or if the ball hits the net then also you will get the point. Moreover, if the ball did not bounce on their side then also you will get the point.

Scoring is based on the points the winner of the game will be the person who will get the 11 points first. However, the first thing is that there should be a gap between both players. It should be two points at least.

Moreover, if the points are equal to 10-10 then the game will go to the extra field until one of them gained the leads of two points. Therefore, the points will go to the player who will successfully end the rally not who has served.

Moreover, the game based on the number of games you like, you have to make sure that you are agreed or not.

Serving: Single:

However, when we talk about Table tennis serving rules then there are two points of serving which are single and double. In single, the players take two serves before the ball switches to the opponent to serve or you can say that the one player has two chances to serve the ball.

It also depends on the extra periods of the extra player as well where it changes every time. Above all, the first person who has to serve at the start of the game can be determined in many different ways. However, it depends on the player that how he or she wants to serve it can be diagonal or straight or whatever type they want.

Service: Double:

When it comes to the double then the service should be diagonal. It should be the right half court of the player one to the opponent’s right half-court.

Service changeover changes in doubles which are as follows:

At the beginning of the game, the serving team will decide which player has to serve first. The player which will serve first is A1 and:

  • An A1 player serves to B1 (these serves will be 2 services)
  • B1player then serves to A2 player (these serves will be 2 services)
  • An A2 player will serve to B2 (these serves will be the 2 services)
  • Then B2 serves A1 and these will also the 2 services.
  • Repeat until one side of the players wins.

However, at the end of game 1and, the start of game 2 the team B will take the service first and the whole process repeated again until the game ends.

Rotation Rules For Doubles:

However, in doubles, you should alternate hitting like diagonal to the ball with your partner. I have given an example of an A1 player and a B1 player. So, the A1 player serves the ball to the B1 player who will return the ball to the opponent. However, the A2 player then hits the ball and the B2 player will return it. Or A1 hits the ball B2 returns or A2 hits the ball and B1 returns and so on.

Service Rules You Must Obey:

The ball must bounce first on your side then it must bounce on the opponent’s side. It happens the same on the opponent’s side the opponent will hit their side of the table before trying to hit the ball.

Moreover, the ball needs to pass over the net or if the clips or the net goes over it is a ‘let’ and serve will be retaken. What will happens if it hits the net and does not go over? Then the point will go to the other team it means your opponent and there will be no second serves.

As the paddle has two sides. Each side has different colors. One side of the paddle has a red color and the other has black color. The weight of the ball should not be so heavy or should not be so light.

However, the size of the ball should be at least 40 mm and it can be either an orange or white-colored ball. Moreover, the table should have 2.74 m long in size and 1.525 in width, and 0.56 m in height.

Here are some rules which we will discuss. So, let’s begin with the Myth-buster’s rules.

Table Tennis Serving Rules: Myth-busters

When I was a player in table tennis I thought that I have known all of the rules. The rules and regulations which I have heard are all I know. Here are some which you should know about that.

Do You Serve Diagonally in Table Tennis or You Don’t Have to?

If you think that you are playing single in table tennis then you have to serve diagonally then you are completely wrong it is up to you that how you want to serve. Yes! In tennis or squash and badminton, you must have to serve diagonally.

Moreover, if you are playing table tennis doubles then you have to serve diagonally and it should always be your right-hand half to your opponent’s right-hand half.

When The Ball Hits You, so That is Your Point?

It is the common rule if the ball hits you and it did not hit the table then it will be a miss. There will be no point; this is not a dodge ball.

I Thought You Were Meant to Play Up to 21? I Don’t Like Playing to 11:

However, when we talk about this case many of the players would probably agree with you that ITTF changed the scoring system from the points of 21 to only points of 11 back in 2001. Moreover, if you are playing competitive games then you should be up to 11 then you might as well get used to it.

Can You Hit The Ball Around The Net?

Yes! Actually, you can but it can be pretty hard to get that shot back. If you put the ball really wide and your opponent is good in rules so he will around the net.

In these cases, it might possible that the ball will just roll on your side of the table not even bounce. It happens sometimes it’s really rare but it happens. If you don’t believe in this then you might check YouTube there are a lot of videos about this.

How Much Times The Ball Has to Cross The Net Before You Start ‘Play For Serve’:

There are a lot of arguments that how much time the ball has to cross the net. ‘play for serve’ is real.  There are four times that the ball has to cross the net before the start of the play to serve. However, mostly in competitive games, the service is decided by the help of coin tossing or the other trick by picking which hand you think the ball has.

Moreover, if you really want to play the play for services then you have to agree at which point you are allowed to start attacking the rally. However, it is really easy to put the ball under the table, and then just you have to guess in which hand the ball is?

In conclusion, there are a lot of rules which have been made by ITTF that are very long and official rules. However, these are serving rules which we have started Table tennis serving rules. These rules might help you to play a good game and improve your gameplay as well,
